Monti’s government “democratic and sober” response to the crisis and social unrest

The demonstrations that took place all over Italy on 14th November as part of a European Day of Action against austerity are already setting the pace of the new management of public order. In Rome in particular it’s been forbidden for months to get anywhere close to the political headquarters during demonstrations, despite the revocation of the decrees introduced last year by the Mayor to turn the whole of the city centre into a red zone.

On 30 January 2012 the Occupy Movement in Bologna – alongside with the universitary and secondary-school CUA and CAS students’ collectives and the Laboratorio Occupato Crash autonomous social centre – promoted a day of action against the government’s austerity measures and the awarding, by the local University, of an honorary degree in International Relations to Giorgio Napolitano – Italy’s President.

Fourth year of the crisis: the Autumn of The Struggles is building up. First the huge international day of struggle on October 15 called by the Spanish indignados; then November 11, promoted by the American Occupy movement: a second, fundamental stage of the mobilisations against the elites of global finance. “Eat the rich”, “We are the 99%”, “Occupy everywhere” are some of the slogans that have echoed throughout the world.

The fall of the empire

Last night a huge crowd gathered outside the Quirinale where Berlusconi was giving his resignation to President Napolitano. Berlusconi was welcomed by shouts of “buffoon”, “mafioso” and Resistance songs. At 21.42pm, when the news was officially announced, wild partying began, and quickly spread to other areas of the city centre.
