Ventilazione – Ivano Fossati

We’ll air these rooms much earlier than Christmas
Before the carbon dioxide starts to harm us.

We’ll be near the window, facing straight into the evening air
We’ll start breathing again, we’ll find the way…

My love.

We haven’t chosen a dark suit, even if it wouldn’t fit us too bad
Practising a mechanical theory based on air.

Call us on the phone – we’ll answer straight away
It’s a matter of clarity of the message, of priority of the agreement.

The metropolitan church sooner or later will get rid of us
But no energy can be enough to repair all these faults.

Nobody will wish to dream a Conservative lawyer
It might be a matter of ventilation, it might be a matter of breathing…

My love.

We’ll air these rooms much earlier than Christmas
Before the carbon dioxide starts to harm us.

We’ll be near the window, facing straight into the evening air
We’ll start breathing again, we’ll find the way…

My love.

The police keeps pictures of everyone, and God knows what they keep them for – People who were coming out in the air literally just to breathe.

But we all have a secret conscience to eat our Christmas lunch with –
It might be a matter of ventilation, or of knowing what’s normal…

My love.

We’ll air these rooms much earlier than Christmas
Before the carbon dioxide starts to harm us.

We’ll set these rooms on fire much earlier than Christmas
Before the oxygen they give us starts to harm us…

My love.

Ivano Fossati is a songwriter from Genoa whose career started in the 70’s (in a prog rock band!). His music could be described as intelligent pop music, with very personal and original lyrics, and diverse musical influences.

I’ve been recently thinking about, and listening to, this song, after years. I’ve always liked the image of it – airing rooms, getting rid of old things that are poisoning us, starting to breathe again. I’ve also always liked how he puts in those lines about the police, almost out of the blue. For me, in that moment the song takes a complete different meaning…And in the last line, the image of those rooms on fire. There’s something about this song that makes me think about what’s going on in Italy at the moment, with the whole NO TAV thing. There’s something about the NO TAV movement that gives me a lot of hope, that makes me think that this time we are really close, as a people – we’ll air these bloody rooms, throw out all the shit that’s been poisoning us for years. We’ll start breathing again, we’ll find the way…My love.
